OPTIC NERVE GLIOMA AND MENINGIOMA

Optic Nerve Glioma

  1. Type of tumor: Benign or low-grade tumor arising from glial cells
  2. Association: Often linked to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
  3. Symptoms: Vision loss, proptosis (bulging eye), or optic nerve damage

Meningioma

  1. Type of tumor: Typically benign tumor arising from meninges (protective membranes around brain and spinal cord)
  2. Location: Can occur near optic nerve or other areas of the brain
  3. Symptoms: Vision loss, double vision, or other neurological symptoms

Treatment

  1. Monitoring: Regular imaging and eye exams
  2. Surgery: To remove tumor or relieve pressure
  3. Radiation therapy: In some cases

ORBITAL SARCOMA

Orbital Sarcoma

Orbital sarcoma is a rare, malignant tumor originating in the soft tissues of the orbit (eye socket). Types include:

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma (most common in children)
  • Other types: osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, and more

Symptoms

  1. Proptosis: Bulging of the eye
  2. Vision changes: Double vision, blurred vision
  3. Pain: Orbital pain or discomfort
  4. Swelling: Around the eye

Diagnosis

  1. Imaging tests: MRI, CT scans
  2. Biopsy: Tissue sample analysis

Treatment

  1. Chemotherapy: To shrink tumors
  2. Radiation therapy: To treat tumors
  3. Surgery: To remove tumors

LEIYOMYOMA

Leiomyoma is a rare, benign tumor that originates from smooth muscle cells.

In the context of the eye, it can occur in the iris. It typically presents as a well-defined, vascularized mass.

Symptoms may include blurred vision or changes in the appearance of the iris.

Treatment usually involves surgical removal.

IRIS STROMAL CYSTS

Iris stromal cysts are benign, fluid-filled growths that occur within the iris stroma, the front layer of the iris.

They can be primary (congenital) or secondary (acquired, often due to trauma or surgery).

Symptoms may include blurred vision, eye pain, or noticeable changes in the iris. Treatment usually involves monitoring or surgical removal if the cyst causes significant issues.

SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS

This is a non cancerous growth appearing as a wax brown tan, usually on the lower eye lid.

This growth is quite common and usually starts at an early age while progressing as one grows older.

Seborrheic keratosis is quite harmless but it can be removed if you find it discomforting.

CONJUNCTIVAL LYMPHANGIOMA

Conjunctival lymphangioma occurs when the lymphatic vessels of the conjunctival dilate and enlarge forming a cyst.

It can appear as a single or multiple cystic lesions. Causes are unknown but then , it has been attributed to poor development of the lymphatic system..

Signs and symptoms includes, reddish lumps, foreign body sensation et.c

Treatment often  involves surgical removal or aspiration if it becomes problematic.

CONJUNCTIVAL PAPILLOMA

This is a harmless growth on the outer surface of the eye. It is usually associated with people with human papilloma virus.

Normally this growth harmless but it can be discomforting, causing itching, pain, blurry vision.

Normally if is not causing any problem, it can be ignored. But can be removed surgically depending on the size and location.

CONJUNCTIVA PYOGENIC GRANULOMA

Conjunctival pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular proliferative growth, found on the conjunctiva. They appear as red or purple mass on the conjunctiva surface.

This condition is usually associated with trauma and surgery or even irritation.

The term pyogenic is oftentimes misleading as conjunctiva pyogenic granuloma is never as a result of infection, neither is it infectious. This condition is usually mistaken for hordeolum or chalazion

It can be treated with topical steroids and topical beta blockers. It can also be excised.

LACRIMAL GLAND LYMPHOMA

This is a rare non Hodgkin’s lymphoma that affects the LACRIMAL GLAND. This lacrimal gland Iocated above the eye and it’s responsible for production of tears.

This condition mainly affects older women..

It can be diagnosed by an MRI and CT scan to get the full extent of the tumour.

Treatment usually involves chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical removal of the tumour.

EYE NEVI OR EYE FRECKLES

Eye nevi or freckles is a harmless pigmented growth found on the surface of the eye ball.

A nevi is a cluster of melanin producing melanocytes. Normally they are harmless but they can eventually grow to become a cancer, if not watched.
